Bio

I was born and raised in a small town of 10,000 in Eastern New Mexico. I am hesitant to mention the name because few people have heard of it. But if they have, they would know it is the Peanut Capital of the World (at least that was what I thought growing-up).

The day after high school graduation, I packed-up my car and drove-out to Los Angeles. After working the summer drilling bowling balls and stringing racquets, I attended UCLA. I graduated five years later with a BS in Neuroscience and a true understanding of why UCLA basketball should be the premier program in the nation.

I also did a lot of volunteer work attempting to figure out what I wanted to do with my life. After 24 hours of patient transport at the UCLA Medical Center, I chose to stock supplies at the Emergency Department(ED). Two days later, I was permitted to stand in the corner while the ED staff treated a patient that was severely injured in a motorcycle accident. I was struck by the calm and decisive manner the ED physician dealt with this potentially life-threatening situation. From that day, I changed my major, began to study and went to medical school and residency to become... an Emergency Physician!

After UCLA, I went back to my home state for medical school at the University of New Mexico. Subsequently, I went on to do my medical training at the UCSF Fresno in Emergency Medicine.

To this day, I am striving to be that perfect ED physician that can treat every patient with solid medical knowledge and compassion in any situation but especially during an "Emergency".

I joined Kaiser Santa Rosa looking for the best-trained emergency medicine group and a hospital that had one clear mission of providing and never jeopardizing solid medical care while providing superior patient satsifaction.

My Medical Specialty

More details about my specialty:

Emergency Medicine is intriguing to me because, more than any other medical field, you can make an immediate difference in a patient's life. On occasion, it is your decisions that directly influence the survival of a patient. In my opinion, that is the ultimate in gratification.

An interesting story from my training:

In medicine and in life, we often talk about things coming in threes. Here is an unlikely occurrence when I was doing my training in Fresno. One day I saw 3 children, without any relationship to each other, with the same color crayon in the same nostril!

Interests

My wife and I just came back from Maui, and we tried surfing there. Now we can't get enough. We have both bought surfboards and brave the cold shark infested waters of northern California every chance we get!

Family & Friends

People in my life:

I live in Santa Rosa with my wife and two dogs, Potter and Coco. We also have a new addition to our family, Alexander.

My children and people I care about:

My wife is also a physician. She works at Santa Rosa Memorial as a hospitalist. We will be married two years this coming October. We met during residency in Fresno.

An interesting story about my family or friends:

I recently asked one of my friends to come visit me in Santa Rosa. He is a single guy who lives in NYC. He arrived one evening at around 10 PM, and his first concern was, "What are we going to do tonight?" I responded, "Go to bed." "What are we going to do tomorrow?" he asked. I said, "We can go to the wineries." "You have wineries?" Needless to say, he has stayed at our home at least one weekend every month since that visit.

My pets:

We have two dogs. They are both mutts. We think they are both about two years old, but who knows for sure? They are both rescue dogs. One was adopted in Clovis, CA, and the other was adopted here with Petpals.

Travel

An adventure I've had:

The Scariest and Happiest Travel Experience

When I was seven, I was in Tokyo, Japan. I was following my parents when I passed a movie display featuring a blood drenched t-shirt. I stopped and stared at every detail. When I turned back, my parent were gone!

I jumped up and down and all I could see were people. Finally, I calmed myself and I got on my tippy-toes and looked in the direction of where my parents were walking. My towering 5'4" mother was easily singled out about 200 yards away as the only person with a perm.

Favorite place in the world:

Kauai. The most beautiful place in the world with the fewest people!

One of my recent trips:

My wife and I just went to Maui. We used all our travel credit from our credit cards and we were able to stay in Maui for 4 nights and 5 days.

We skipped the road to Hana because we both get carsickness.

On the second day, we took a surfing lesson and we were hooked. We surfed for the rest on the time we were in Maui and skipped most of the other sights.
