New Facilities: Build, Renovate, Thrive

The new Modesto Medical Center opened its doors on October 1st.
Sure, the Modesto Medical Center earned national recognition for its green design before even opening this month. But the pro-planet, patient-friendly hospital is just one celebrated piece of a multi-year, multi-billion dollar investment Kaiser Permanente has made in new construction around the Northern California Region.
Here is a quick review of the other exciting, new projects:
New Hospitals, Specialty Centers, and Medical Office Buildings
Construction is currently under way on the South San Francisco Cancer Treatment Center. The center is scheduled to open at the end of 2008 and will specialize in treating brain cancer patients. The South San Francisco center will house some of the most advanced, radiation-therapy technology available and will include 12 exam rooms, seven physician offices, four radiation-therapy rooms, and will treat about 1,000 patients a year from San Mateo County and the San Francisco area.
The Roseville Women and Children's Center will open on the Kaiser Permanente Roseville Medical Center campus in January 2009 with 174 beds, a neonatal intensive care unit, pediatric ICU, and pediatric unit. Labor and delivery services will move from the Sacramento Medical Center to the new center, which when completed will be the largest birthing department in the Sacramento region.
The Pinole Medical Office Building is expected to open this winter. The medical office building will offer more convenient access to members near and around Pinole. It will provide family practice, adult primary care, pediatrics, Ob/Gyn, radiology, lab, pharmacy, and health education. There will not be any emergency services at this East Bay facility.
Folsom Medical Center: Construction on this new medical center started in April, and when completed will include a 224-bed hospital, an Medical Office Building with space for 120 health care providers, an ambulatory surgery unit with six operating rooms, and 24 pre-op and recovery bays. The ambulatory surgery unit is scheduled to open in the fall. The medical office building is scheduled to open in 2014, with the hospital opening in 2015. Kaiser Permanente cares for more than 68,000 members who live in Folsom and the surrounding communities. By 2012, that number is expected to reach nearly 85,000.
Rebuilds and Expansions
Vacaville: A new medical office building is scheduled to open in Vacaville in November, with a hospital opening in spring 2009. The Vacaville expansion project is part of a $1 billion investment by Kaiser Permanente in Solano County, which includes a new replacement hospital at the Vallejo Medical Center. The new four-story Vacaville hospital will contain 150 beds with private rooms, maternity services, emergency care, radiology, and a range of surgical services.
Oakland: A new medical office building is scheduled to open on the Oakland campus in early summer 2009, during the first phase of the medical center's rebuild. The new five-story building at Broadway and MacArthur Boulevard will include 50 medical offices, a cancer care center, two pharmacies, classrooms, a physical therapy gym, and a serenity garden.
Roseville: A new medical office building is planned as part of a major expansion of the Roseville campus. In addition to construction of the new Women and Childrens Center, and major expansions to the hospital's emergency room and Radiology Department, a second medical office building is scheduled to open on the Roseville campus in February 2009. It will house specialists in allergy, neurology, endocrinology, cancer, urology, sleep disorders, orthopedics, and gastroenterology. Women's health physicians and specialists will also be in the new building, providing Ob/Gyn, high-risk pregnancy diagnosis, gynecological, urology, fertility services, and breast health care, among other services.
Elk Grove: Plans are under way for a second medical office building in Elk Grove, where half of the residents are Kaiser Permanente members. Construction will begin in 2009 on the new $45 million facility, which when completed will provide primary care, laboratory, radiology, and pharmacy services.
Santa Rosa Medical Center: The hospital is undergoing a major expansion with a new five-story tower scheduled to open in October 2010. With the rebuild, the number of hospital beds will increase to 195, the size of the Emergency Department and the Intensive Care Unit will double, and a new interventional radiology/catheterization lab will be available. There were about 70,000 Kaiser Permanente members in the Santa Rosa area when the original hospital was built in 1990. Today, with four additional medical office buildings to serve members, that number has grown to 134,000.
