Bio

Let me introduce myself here before meeting you. I grew up in Taiwan and moved to Davis, California as a teenager. I double-majored in Applied Mathematics and Molecular & Cell Biology at the University of California, Berkeley. My career decisions were very much influenced by my family members. My father taught math and I contemplated being a math professor. After taking 'Abstract Algebra' as a junior in college, I decided that mathematics was way too abstract for me. Besides, I can never see the end of pi (p =3.14159265358979323846...) and that sort of bothered me.... Three of my uncles were doctors; I just loved to emulate them as a little girl and decided to pursue that dream.

After finishing medical school at the University of Pittsburgh, PA and internal medicine training at the University of Rochester, NY I decided to return to California. I spent one year at the University of California, San Diego, focusing on DM research and management, and then came back to the Bay Area, spending three years at the University of California, San Francisco for additional training in Endocrinology. I am certified in both Internal Medicine and the subspecialty of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism.

I joined Kaiser Permanente in 2002 after finishing my fellowship training at UCSF, and have had a great experience working with the staff here. I believe in an integrated health care system and in evidence-based medicine which Kaiser Permanente proudly provides. I enjoy teaching and I attend at the Endocrine Clinics at the UCSF Medical Center and the San Francisco VA Medical Center as an Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine. Most importantly, I enjoy working with you and believe that you should also take an active role in your own health. Helping you and seeing you getting better and feeling better is one of my greatest satisfactions.

Provided here are some of the reputable links and websites where you may look up or learn more about your specific conditions. I look forward to meeting you in person and working with you.

My Medical Specialty

My specialty interests and affiliations within my field:

During my fellowship training at UCSF, I conducted clinical studies on Cushing's syndrome and pheochromocytoma. I have continued to maintain a strong interest in the areas of pituitary and adrenal disorders. My training is nevertheless well rounded, including thyroid disorders, calcium metabolism/osteoporosis, diabetes, and lipid disorders.

Interests

Once somewhat afraid of water from a bad snorkeling experience many years ago, I overcame my fear by forcing myself to take swimming lessons last year. Now I enjoy snorkeling, and dream that maybe one day I will be able to do a triathlon event although I am still trying to perfect my breathing techniques and strokes to keep water out of my nose and my mouth while swimming.

Travel

An adventure I've had:

I would love to travel more. Active or adventurous traveling (such as biking, kayaking, hiking, and rafting) as well as exploration of the local cultures is my ideal good vacation. Here are some of the pictures I want to share with you, taking me back to some of my trips.

I remember my trip to Kyoto, Japan; without knowing a word of Japanese, using my 'sign language' and finger-pointing skills on a map, with gracious help from the local people (and the police), I got to my destinations by bus and on foot.

I still reminisce about the grandeur of Half Dome and the Yosemite fall, so much better than the postcards!

I treasure the serenity of kayaking in Alaska, the quiet sunset in Maui, with the beach surrounded by surfers and tourists. And the beautiful rainbow after a warm summer shower by the camp site in the Yellowstone National Park; it was so close, I thought if I'd tried just a little bit harder I could've actually touched it.
