Diabetes Care Manager & HIV Nutritionist

Why I Studied Nutrition

In 1980 I cycled from California to Utah with a friend who has diabetes. I saw how fit he stayed because of healthy eating, exercise, blood glucose monitoring and tight blood glucose control.

I have always loved studying how nutrients interact and putting it into practice in helping others feel and function at their best.

I believe in chocolate, love bicycling, skiing, sailing and the outdoors. I cycled through Europe and studied and became fluent in French. I found the French "paradox" is in their healthier eating and active lifestyle.

I have been fortunate to have been involved in many aspects of nutrition: nutrition support, hemodialysis, home health, hospice, weight management, eating disorders, etc. Currently, I am serving on the board of the Diabetes Society of Sonoma County.

Why I’m at Kaiser

Through all my years as a dietitian I could see that the medical facilities I was working in were fragmented and not very effective in helping people become healthier. It was while doing research for my Master’s thesis and through a cardiovascular fellowship that I got exposed to Prochaska’s "Stages of Change" model. When I learned that Kaiser was practicing this model, I knew that this is where I wanted to work and could be in a position to make a difference. I started working at Kaiser in 2000 as an In-Patient Dietitian and instructor of "Living Well With Diabetes". In 2002, I took my current position as Diabetes Care Manager and HIV Nutritionist.
