Karen Leung, MD

Bio

I come from a family of physicians. I have my father to thank for my enthusiasm towards patient care. My dad is a family practice doctor in Texas. Between my father, my mother (a nurse), my younger sister (a pediatrician), and my younger brother (also an obstetrician-gynecologist), most people can only imagine what dominated our dinner table conversations.

I was born in Canada and grew up in northern Ontario where winters are harsh and summers are short. One of my earliest memories as a child was weekends when my dad took me along for patient rounds, followed by Dairy Queen ice cream cones!

To escape the Canadian weather, our family moved to Texas where I finished high school. I graduated Phi Beta Kappa (for scholastic achievement) and Magna Cum Laude from the University of Dallas, a small liberal arts school, with a major in biology and biochemistry. I earned my medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern in 1993 and started my residency taking care of women at Parkland Hospital in Dallas, with over 14,000 births a year. To be in the same location as my husband, Tony Chu (where he also was completing his residency in oral maxillofacial surgery), I completed my advanced training in obstetrics and gynecological medicine and surgery at University of Texas Houston.

An interesting story from my training:

Before leaving private practice in Houston for Sonoma County, I was featured performing a delivery “live” on Good Morning America in February 2001. My patient happened to be the only patient delivering at exactly 7:00 in the morning in Houston. She wanted to share the experience not only with Charlie Gibson but the rest of the country. The other two "live" sites included Boston and the Univeristy of Texas Southwestern in Dallas, where I trained. Thereafter, it was amazing that so many of my patients, high school & college friends, colleagues, and former teachers watched and shared that special delivery.

My children and people I care about:

I was torn about leaving my growing practice in Houston; however, my husband and I decided to leave the bustling urban city for the safer and slower pace of Santa Rosa for our four children.

The kids would like a pet; we are open to suggestions that are hypoallergenic now that they are getting older!

Travel

Favorite place in the world:

We we have the time, we love to travel. The child comes out of all of us when you travel with your children and see the world through their eyes. Every experience is new and fresh.
