Bio

Raised in the Midwest, I moved to the Bay Area after high school and attended college nearby at Sonoma State, with a year off working in the operating room of Palm Drive Hospital where I was introduced to orthopedic surgery. I've always been impressed at how orthopedics improves lives. I had chosen my specialty before graduating college, intrigued by its blend of mechanics and biology and the ability to have a positive impact on most patients.

After training in Missouri and Boston, I returned to Sonoma County with a private practice in Sebastopol in 1989-99 before coming to Kaiser Permanente Santa Rosa. I enjoy this practice environment for the physician based decision making, the integration of care, and knowledge and skill of my colleagues.

I am a general orthopedic surgeon treating a broad spectrum of musculoskeletal problems. I have an interest in arthroscopy and joint replacement.

My goal is to improve patient's quality of life through medical and surgical means, to improve function and mobility for patients of all ages.

My Medical Specialty

More details about my specialty:

I like the fact that orthopedic surgery spans all age groups from a newborn in the nursery with hip problems to a 104 year-old woman with hip fracture.

Of the medical specialties, orthopedics provides for me great satisfaction in improving nearly every patient's health, having great tools/technology that are always refining, and using manual skills that began in my youth (volkswagen mechanics, archery, music: bass, art: sculpture).

Family & Friends

People in my life:

I met my wife, Pam, in 1973 in Petaluma. We were married in 1976 before entering medical school. Pam is a serious birder and docent for Laguna de Santa Rosa. Loves having her own kayak (can't lift it), cooking, gardening, and stained glass.

My children and people I care about:

I have a son working on an astronomy doctorate at U Hawaii with NASA aspirations, a triathlete living the hard Oahu lifestyle. His summer job is part of a trajectory team on the Deep Impact Project.

I have a daughter at UC Santa Barbara, in economics. She is a competitive swimmer (sprinter) since age 6, and a diver. She is studying abroad in Sydney.

Travel

One of my recent trips:

My most memorable travel experience was in Spring '05 in Maui when humpback whales migrated through in numbers. I kayaked, snorkeled and watched their young learn to breach from their massive parents. A very close 2nd memorable experience was Northshore Oahu shark cage photography.
