Perioperative nurses provide care and support to patients before, during, and after surgery.
Operating room nurses are responsible for maintaining a sterile environment within the operating room and supporting surgeons during surgery.
Nurses in the Ambulatory Surgery Unit (ASU) prepare patients for surgery. This includes doing a preoperative evaluation, starting an IV line, and giving preop medications.
Nurses in the Post Operative Care Unit (PACU) monitor surgical patients as they emerge from anesthesia. They give pain medication to keep patients comfortable until they are ready to be transferred to a hospital room or to be sent home.
