I am a Clinical Social Worker in the Santa Rosa Department of Psychiatry. I joined the Department in 1996. Initially I was a Behavior Medicine Specialist in Family Medicine and, since 1998, have been a psychotherapist on the adult team. I enjoy working in an integrated medical system with a dynamic group of dedicated professionals who strive to provide the best available clinical services to our members.
As a member of the adult clinical team, I provide initial evaluations, individual brief psychotherapy and skill based, short-term psychotherapy groups. I emphasize the individual relationship with my patients and make use of the multifaceted treatment options available to us because of extensive staff and resources in the department and in the medical center. In our department, treatment begins with an initial evaluation. An individual treatment plan is formulated based on that evaluation. Treatment options include individual and group psychotherapy, psycho educational classes, medication evaluations and management, and possibly referrals to other programs offered through our medical center or in the community.
In over three decades of clinical experience, I have developed a focused, integrative treatment approach designed to help patients accept, and more effectively deal with, the realities of their life. My approach consists of solutions oriented, cognitive behavioral techniques where appropriate, elements of eastern psychology, and a psychodynamic understanding. My treatment philosophy embraces mindfulness as an effective tool for managing our emotional responses to the sometimes difficult situations we are faced with. This includes developing an awareness and attention to the present moment from an accepting, non-judgmental stance. I see my role as helping my patients assume an active role in improving their self-care and in developing the most effective relationship with the realities of their lives.
Regarding my background, I grew up in New York and received my undergraduate degree in Philosophy from the University of Wisconsin in Madison, Wisconsin. I received my Masters of Social Work (MSW) from California State University, Sacramento in 1967. Most of my clinical work has been in private practice though I have worked in various settings, both public and private. I have also taught at the college (graduate and undergraduate) level.
