More details about my specialty:When I was at East High School and my father was one of the first emergency physicians in Denver, I did not realize that some day I would be an emergency physician as well. In fact, my father was an emergency physician before the specialty of Emergency Medicine had been established. And he was at Denver General Hospital in the "emergency room" before it became one of the first actual emergency departments in the country. I attended medical school at the University of Colorado in Denver and gained my interest in emergency medicine during a trauma surgery rotation at the Denver General emergency room. Several years later, I would become an Emergency Medicine Resident in the same hospital, beginning my career as a specialist in Emergency Medicine, under the tutelage of Dr. Peter Rosen, credited by many in the field as the "Father of Emergency Medicine." My specialty interests and affiliations within my field:Emergency Medicine provides the opportunity to care for people and see them at their extremes. There is endless variety in medical problems, personalities, and emergency situations. The diversity of medical issues and the variety of problems requiring constant resourcefulness to care for them make Emergency Medicine the most attractive medical practice I can imagine. Current projects or research:I am interested in emergency medical systems, including pre-hospital care and transportation, disaster management, and emergency preparedness. I am currently the elected Hospital and Emergency Department Representative on the Coastal Valleys EMS Emergency Medical Care Council and have been active with the EMS Agency for most of the years I have been in Santa Rosa. Additionally, I have worked with Emergency Prospective Review Program (EPRP), which facilitates care for Kaiser Permanente members in non-Kaiser Permanente emergency departments by working with the non-Kaiser Permanente emergency physician in the care and medical management of our Kaiser Permanente members under his/her care. EPRP assists in providing continued care at Kaiser Permanente when appropriate, and helps arrange follow-up or, in some cases, hospitalization, at Kaiser Permanente facilities. Great health resources that I refer to:The Healthwise Handbook is a useful resource for Kaiser Permanente members and non-members alike. To help keep up to date, I subscribe to an emergency medical abstract service which reviews and critiques the latest medical literature and The Medical Letter which provides unbiased reviews of the latest drugs and therapies. I also rely heavily on Kaiser Permanente's Clinical Library which has a wealth of information online. An interesting story from my training:One of the more notable patients I have cared for was a man who was removed from the top of a flagpole in downtown Los Angeles on New Years Eve and who subsequently capsized his dinghy in Long Beach harbor the same night. |

In Rome, when asking directions in my best Italian, the very kind woman who was responding to me politely said, "I'm sorry, but I don't speak English." She was eventually able to give correct directions, however, to the Catacombs Priscilla. Currently reading: My favorite book or author: Great movie: |

An adventure I've had:The most exciting travels were my trips to China and the Soviet Union in the early 1980's. China was emerging from the Cultural Revolution and starting to open up to the West. Chinese citizens would stop and stare at Westerners, amazed by Caucasian features. In the Soviet Union, I had several nonviolent encounters with the KGB. I am convinced that unemployment was minimal there because those who were not working were employed to watch those who were. Favorite place in the world:I have many favorite places, but some have a sacred feel to them, including Hang Chow, Assisi, and the top of Grey Mountain in southern Colorado. One of my recent trips:I found "The Beast" of the song "Hotel California" in ... the restroom of the Hotel California in Todos Santos in South Baja! |
